Toronto One of a Kind Show and other thoughts on individuality

Hello Hello!

So as many of you know via Instagram I was at the Toronto One of a Kind Show last week and it called it a wrap on Sunday night. It was so amazing!!! I literally wanted to buy everything that I could see! I love this show because everyone there is exploring their hustle!

We started the day with an AH-MA-ZING breakfast by Toben Food by Design and then were set loose to go explore the 500 artisans! Guys, these people know what they’re doing. There was anything and everything from cocktails to candles, canapés to crocheted scarves . . . see that little alliteration I did there 😉 This show is completely my style. Check it, guys don’t yah hate it when you find this really neat thing, and then you notice that so many people have it too <insert crying laughing emoji here>. This is the place to be to get curated, super chic and trendy things that are amazing quality as well.

My personal goodie bag that I treated myself to?

. . . .  Welp, I died at the Coal & Canary booth 🙂 I LOVE LOVE LOVE these candles! The company is based out of Winnipeg and literally embodies what it means to be a kick ass Canadian company. The candles are my favorite. period. They have this super chic, wooden wick, that actually doubles with a purpose! Haha and I just thought it was pretty. . . The wood actually mitigates the smokey, soot that sometimes comes with string wicks. In any case, these candles come in so many delicious scents I had trouble deciding which to get. To top off all of this, I love watching their IG stories because Tom and Amanda, the founders, are friggin’ hilarious! Check ’em out for sure!

Okay to switch gears here a little, I want to talk more about being one of a kind and individuality! I think the Toronto One of a Kind Show is the perfect example of breaking out and being YOU! You might recall the post I did on you do you . Essentially, you need to stick to what you are driven to do no matter what others think. I really believe that the artisans at the show did just that. I had the opportunity to chat with so many of the booth owners, who by the way were all incredible people and all had their own story. Some knew they wanted to start a business from the beginning of their careers, some are doing this on the side and some did a complete 180 and decided to changes their lives, because well . . . #yolo!

Yes, it sounds cliche to say, but you only live once!

I am just thinking about so many people I meet who have ideas of things they want to do and for some reason are not letting themselves step out from the mold that they have been  put in, either by themselves, their family or society as a whole. When I sat down to write this, I really wanted to bring some personality and perspective to the idea of one of a kind. I don’t think I can find a way to make my points not sound cliche but oh well, here we go!

YOU ARE ONE OF A KIND; BE THE ‘YOU’ THAT YOU WANT TO BE

If you want to start a business; do it! If it is a blog that is pulling at your heartstrings, get going. Maybe the adventure you want to have is literally traveling sub-sahara Africa, you CAN make this happen. Don’t feel the need to stay in your prescribed path just because your peers are. This might be the part where you’re thinking, great Annika, thanks for the motivation but where can I get the time, money, knowledge for this; it isn’t that easy!

You’re right, breaking away from the norm is tough, no jokes, but if it is important enough to you, you can find a way to do it! Consider taking that dream and breaking it down into attainable steps. For example, lets say you want to start a business. Start by setting aside a few hours a week to work on this; it could be a chunk of time or maybe three nights in a row of one hour. Start the research, make your business plan, launch a site and see what kind of interest there is. Have you read The four hour work week? If not, then you should definitely pick up a copy, he talks a lot about launching a business to see what kind of interest there is for your product before you invest too much money in actually making it; its a brilliant idea!

With any goal, there is a way to get started, you just have to be creative. BE YOU; BE ONE OF A KIND!

What are your dreams that you haven’t started yet? Feel free to reach out (email, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter) or comment below if you want to create a plan to tackle your goals; I would LOVE to help 🙂

Happy YOLOing!
