How to make EPIC new year’s resolutions!

New Year's resolutions

Too soon? I think not. I think we all know that famous saying, “fail to plan then plan to fail”. . . I think this is the same thing! Each year, people wait until the last minute to make their New Year’s Resolutions. For some, it might be at 12:00am as you’re kissing whomever is standing next to you or maybe you’re one of the lucky bunch and do it when you wake up tired and hungover from the big night and you vow ” I AM NEVER DRINKING AGAIN”. Well let’s get real and try to make some goals that we will actually stick to right? I will be doing a post on how to stick to your goals but in the mean time why don’t we start thinking about what our goals are and how we can measure ourselves to see if we actually succeeded or not, because depending on the goal, success will look very different.

Here are some ideas for unique New Year’s Resolutions!

This was just a few ideas but I would imagine that some of these (if not all in some way) resonate with you. I also believe it is SO important to choose realistic goals, right, like I am not going to make a goal of climbing Mt. Everest in March as I know that from a basic fitness level it could take years to be ready for that! So, keep it reasonable shall we?

“When we strive to become better than we are, everything around us becomes better too” . . . Paulo Coelho

Really you can goal set or create resolutions at ANY time in the year, it doesn’t have to be the beginning of January! Though since it is the “thing to do” we might as well take advantage of it. When choosing your goals yes, be realistic, but at the same time don’t hold yourself back! I don’t want any of this “I am too late/old/lazy/busy/tired for this” I am calling a BIG B.S on that! There are many examples of people who decided to totally change their lives at a later than “normal” time. Look at Vera Wang who only started designing wedding dresses at age 40 and now she is one of the most famous names in the wedding industry! It is all about being persistent and consistent with your goals, I have spoken about this before. If you don’t keep pushing yourself to try a little harder in respect with your goal then no, it won’t happen for you and then you will be disappointed and say, “I knew I shouldn’t have wasted time bettering myself”, which is silly because you’re the one who quit anyway! We will get more into how to “stick to” your goals later in the month so stay tuned! Right now though, let’s focus on how to create those goals to set yourself up for success!!!

Tippy-Tips on Goal Setting

  • Can I go all  I use to be a consultant and suggest S.M.A.R.T goals??? (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Time oriented) I know it sounds like a lot surrounding ONE of the goals that you’re trying to accomplish but really, do you want to succeed or go through another year of, “oh well I will try again next year”??? Let’s walk through an example shall we 🙂
    • Let’s say you like the I WANT TO TRAVEL MORE goal? Firstly, YAHOO, that is one of my favs 🙂
      • S – Drill down to what that means – traveling more is kind of a vague thing to say. Do you want to travel more locally, nationally or internationally? If internationally, where? How many times? Let’s say you want to go to South America as you haven’t been and are dying to go. Then re-frame the goal from . . .

        Traveling more . . . to . . .  Visit Argentina

      • You can get even more specific to visit Buenos Aires
      • M – Well this one is obvious to measure, but you can set yourself a measuring stick of, “spend a week in Buenos Aires and eat steak, dance tango and find a new red wine that I love”. Once those three things are accomplished then you have “measured” yourself on this goal.
      • A – okay, let’s look at the whole picture here, is it ACHIEVABLE to have this happen in  the year? If you have other things eating up your money or no vacation time, you need to re-think your goal! If you won’t be able to do it then switch gears!
      • R – Realistic is similar to Achievable, but a nice enforcement, CAN YOU ACTUALLY DO THIS GOAL??? If you have trouble determining whether it is possible, ask a close (critical) friend who can ask you all the questions from a third party perspective to see if this goal is actually going to happen.
      • T – This is KEY!!!! All the S.M.A.R.T steps are key but this is the kicker! TIME ORIENTED or TIME MEASURED; WHEN are you going to complete this goal by? You literally need to say, “I am going to Buenos Aires no later than September 2017 or maybe it is December 31 2017, it doesn’t matter when as long as you stick with the timeline. Use the timeline to your advantage. If you plan to go in December, you have 11.75 months to save, prepare and plan for this goal 🙂

I hope this was helpful!!! I love goal setting and sometimes is it so easy to think that you either have passed your expiration date for certain goals or on the other extreme will set goals that are so out of the water that you will end up being disappointed Let’s take 2017 for self development and end up this time next year with adventure stories to inspire us for 2018 goals 🙂

Happy Goal Setting!
